Karen Angstadt was born and raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and now resides in Martin County, Florida. As a teenager, Karen found solace from depression in painting and drawing and was accepted into a Fine Arts program at a large university. A serious car accident changed those plans and her formal studies ended.
As a hobbyist, Karen learned new techniques over the years taking local classes and using instructional videos. Her exploration of new media expanded when she began facilitating classes for children at her local homeschool co-op. She discovered Suminagashi, an ancient technique she has adapted to create fluid ink designs on fabric and paper.
Inspired by the Impressionists, Karen’s vibrantly colorful work is completed when the viewer discovers hidden imagery within a piece. In this way, she says, the viewer is part of the work’s “becoming.” Just as making art has helped Karen feel whole throughout her life, she hopes her work inspires viewers to find parts of themselves within it.
Karen has recently translated her method from producing only small pieces to creating much larger works. She continues to explore and expand the possibilities of fluid ink design.
